Big Corporations are buying up U.S. Farmland and Planting new GMO Crops. What has happened to 3rd World Countries is happening now in the Unites States. The small farmers are being forced out by Big Corporations who are buying up all the farmland with the intention of planting new genetically modified crops.
This has happened in countries like India, which has the highest suicide rate amongst farmers in the world. Enticed by promises of higher yields, these farmers were initially enticed to abandon heirloom crops they had planted for centuries in favor of GMO crops like BT cotton and wheat. But nature strikes back and GMO crops which are supposed to be bug resistant, stop being resistant as bugs develop immunity to the poisons over time. Leaving farmers broke and destitute with failing crops and higher fertilizer and pesticide costs, leading to a breakdown of the whole farming system and to suicide by the thousands.
In the United States, rising fertilizer costs have preceded this huge farmland buyout, leaving many with no way of sustaining their land or new small farmers from buying new farmland. These Big Corporations are swooping in with big wallets, offering high prices for farmland. If this continues, small farms will no longer be viable in the United States, and we will have lost our Food Sovereignty. Our Food Freedom is in jeopardy.
The Solution: Conventional Farming methods are enslaving us to fertilizer producers and GMO seed companies like Bayer/Monsanto. Time to go back to heirloom seeds and ancient grains, and to adopt organic regenerative farming methods.
