NLP = Neurolinguistic Programming

What is NLP?
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It’s about how we communicate and learn from each other. There are two big ideas that helped create NLP.

The first idea comes from something called cybernetics. This is a way of understanding how things work together by looking at feedback. In the 1940s and 1950s, a smart person named Gregory Bateson helped a lot with these ideas. The founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, said that when people talk face-to-face, they learn from each other’s responses. This is called a feedback loop.

The second idea comes from research done in the 1960s at the Palo Alto Mental Research Institute, where Bateson was also involved. Here, researchers focused on how people communicate in everyday life. They believed that everyone sees the world differently, so we all create our own ideas about what is real.

Another important part of NLP is the self-help movement in the United States during the mid-1900s. This movement encouraged people to improve themselves. Books like Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People and Norman Vincent Peale’s Power of Positive Thinking inspired many people to change for the better.

In the 1960s, California became a place where many people learned about personal growth, especially at a place called the Esalen Institute. Two important therapists, Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls, worked there.

Fritz Perls helped develop a type of therapy called Gestalt therapy. He passed away in 1970, but before he did, he asked Bandler to help finish some of his work. Bandler also worked with Virginia Satir and recorded her workshops to create a book.

Bandler then studied at Kresge College, which was a unique school at the University of Santa Cruz. There, he met John Grinder, who became his partner in creating NLP. Together, they wrote two books called The Structure of Magic in 1975 and 1976. These books explored how great communicators like Satir and Perls used language and ideas to connect with people.
