Today I explore the abandoned Letchworth Asylum in Letchworth Village in New York.
In the early 1970s Geraldo Rivera visited Letchworth Village exposing the horrible conditions and poor treatment of the residents.
The Asylum, or Psychiatric Hospital, operated from 1911 to 1996. Dating back to the 1920s, there had been reports of residents without clothes, unbathed, and in poor health. From 1914 to 1967 some residents who passed away were buried in the nearby forest in a clearing.
