Salvation through baptism is perhaps one of the most debated theological matters across Christian denominations. There are passages in the Bible that root for the primacy of baptism toward salvation, while other passages also communicate that through faith comes salvation. Below is the rundown of the most important perspectives and biblical passages:

1. Passages Emphasizing Baptism:
There are some Bible verses that seem to link baptism with salvation:

Mark 16:16 (KJV):

"He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."
This verse would therefore appear to be saying, if taken literally, that baptism is part of salvation, but note the emphasis is belief-a lack of it-begets condemnation.

Acts 2:38 (KJV):

"Then Peter said unto them, 'Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost'."
Here, he calls the people to repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins, which shows that baptism is part of the process of salvation.

1 Peter 3:21 (KJV):

"The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ."
This verse does indeed link baptism with salvation but then proceeds to underscore the fact that it is not the act in and of itself but rather the appeal to God through Jesus that saves.

2. Passages Emphasizing Faith Alone:
Other verses in the New Testament emphasize faith in Jesus Christ for salvation:

Ephesians 2:8-9,
KJV:

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast."
This is to say that faith itself is a gift from God to provide salvation, not to be attained through works or ritual.

John 3:16, KJV says,

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
This verse alone tells us about belief in Jesus as the pre-requisite to have eternal life and does not mention anything about baptism.

Romans 10:9-10 (KJV):

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
Again, the emphasis is on confession and belief as a means of salvation.

3. Different Christian Perspectives:
Baptismal regeneration required for salvation: Some of the traditions-one thinks of Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox-tradition does, in fact, declare baptism necessary to receive God's grace and salvation. They believe this process, when applied with faith, regenerates the believer and washes away sin.

Salvation by Faith Alone: Protestant traditions, especially those coming from the Reformation, like most Evangelicals, Baptists, and Reformed churches, teach that salvation is by faith alone. They consider baptism an important step of obedience and a public declaration of faith but do not regard it as constituting salvation itself.

4. Jesus' Example – The Thief on the Cross:
In Luke 23:42-43 KJV, the request of the thief on the cross to Jesus was to remember him when He comes into His kingdom. Then Jesus said:

"And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise."

He was not baptized, but Jesus granted him a promise of salvation. This is the case many people cite when attempting to make the case that baptism is not required for salvation, although it is a step of obedience.

Conclusion:
As baptism is commanded in Scripture, and closely associated with faith and salvation in certain verses, numerous passages bring the ultimate importance of faith in Jesus Christ as that which saves a person. Most Protestant traditions teach that baptism is not required for salvation, but rather an outward sign of an inward faith. Other traditions, particularly Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox, view baptism as integral to the process of salvation.
