Walkie-talkies and solar equipment exploded in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon on Wednesday in a second wave of personal device explosions targeting Hezbollah. The blasts went off wherever the holder of the pager happened to be — in homes, cars, and at grocery stores, often with family or bystanders nearby. At least 20 people were killed and more than 450 wounded in that attack, the Health Ministry said. Twelve people, including at least two children, were killed the previous day and more than 2,300 injured. Civilians were among them. Israel has not commented on the detonations, but it’s widely believed that intelligence officials from the country were responsible for the attacks. Counterterrorism and intelligence expert Matthew Levitt spoke to Power & Politics about the implications of these attacks for the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

This interview originally aired Sept. 18, 2024.
