Info: Throughout the Second World War there were many amazing acts of valour and bravery. The conflict saw people who were living ordinary lives before the war thrust into the heart of the deadliest battles that History has ever seen. But there was one man who was a sheep farmer who received the two highest military awards given out by the British. Charles Upham was from New Zealand, and he fought in some of the toughest terrain of the Second World War. His first Victoria Cross came following heroic antics in Crete where he personally attacked a number of machine gun posts destroying them with grenades, and he led his men with skill. He also helped to evacuate a number of wounded soldiers.

The Second Victoria Cross Charles Upham received came in the North African Campaign, and during this he led his soldiers heroically under heavy fire. He was wounded in this and then was captured by the enemy and he became a Prisoner of War. However he tried to escape a number of times, for example he jumped from a moving train and even got caught in barbed wire. He was then sent to Colditz, where he was kept until he was liberated. But Charles Upham remains the most decorated Allied soldier of the Second World War.
