Retired Special Force Major Heston Russell has called ABC chair Kim Williams to meet with him after the public broadcaster was forced to delete doctored audio from a news report it claimed depicted Australian soldiers firing on unarmed civilians.

The ABC alleged the video showed Mr Russell shooting at unarmed Afghan civilians.

Seven News Spotlight's team reported the clip's audio had been altered, adding the sound of five extra gunshots being fired over a single warning shot.

The network has launched an investigation into how the mistake occurred, after coming under fire.

“I've written to Kim Williams the new ABC chair overnight asking to meet with him to discuss this and one thing I'd like to make perfectly clear is one they've changed the footage to add those gunshots but two they all provided with the entire five minutes’ worth of helmet cam footage that shows after that engagement me and my signal are land go and try and capture this person and then get ambushed and shot at by these insurgents,” Mr Russell told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“The whole story is completely wrong and they've had the full footage for nearly 18 months since April last year.”
