Why did God kill so many people in the Old Testament?

Why did God kill so many people, nations, towns and villages in the old testament? When rebellion sets in, that is demonic spirits. There was no provision to be set free from a demon, except death. BUT JESUS!!! God gives Jesus to set us free from demons. He blood that was shed got the keys to the kingdom back into man's hands to have dominion once again.
