Colorado State Patrol trooper shot while parked along highway, kills gunman.

On September 7, 2024, Colorado State Patrol Corporal Tye Simcox was ambushed while parked in the median of Highway 36 in Westminster. The attacker, 23-year-old Victor Anthony De Santiago, drove up in a pickup truck, slowed down, and fired multiple shots at Simcox using a semi-automatic handgun. Simcox was hit in the right arm but managed to return fire, fatally wounding De Santiago during the brief shootout. De Santiago died at the scene.
