The NYPD is investigating a chaotic incident at a subway station where police opened fire, resulting in injuries to an officer, a suspect, and two innocent bystanders.

The confrontation began when officers attempted to stop a 37-year-old man for fare evasion, during which the suspect threatened them and brandished a knife.

After efforts to subdue him with a taser failed, officers fired their weapons inside a subway train that had just arrived, hitting the suspect and two passengers—a 49-year-old man who is in critical condition and a 26-year-old woman who is stable after being grazed by a bullet.

The officer involved is hospitalized, with uncertainty over whether he was struck by a bullet or a fragment.

The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is handling the case, and bodycam footage is expected to provide clarity on the events, ABC 7 New York has reported.
