Two former high-ranking officials of the New York City Fire Department, Anthony Saccavino and Brian Cordasco, were indicted by federal prosecutors for accepting over $190,000 in bribes to expedite fire safety reviews.

The indictment comes amid increased scrutiny of Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, following the resignation of Police Commissioner Edward Caban due to a federal investigation into nightclub enforcement.

Saccavino and Cordasco, who previously oversaw the Bureau of Fire Prevention, allegedly took bribes in exchange for prioritizing inspections for businesses connected to a retired firefighter’s “expediting” service.

Both chiefs have since retired and face multiple charges, including conspiracy and making false statements to federal agents, NBC News has reported.
