Our Grand Denver Zoo Expedition: Tips for Visiting in the Heat-Lisa Jo, your essential oil girl

Hey everyone! It's Lisa Jo, your essential oil enthusiast, and today I'm coming to you with a special guest, my granddaughter—or as I like to call her, my daughter's daughter—Lucy! We're at the Denver Zoo today, and wow, it's a scorcher out here. They predicted a high of 86 degrees, but it feels closer to 97. We've been here just over an hour, and we're both ready to head out due to the heat.

Our experience at the zoo has been a mixed bag. We ventured into the elephant house, which, turns out, doubles as their bathroom based on the smell! The splash pad, which we hoped would offer some relief, was unfortunately turned off today, leaving dozens of kids vying for a spot in a tiny, trickling leak. Not exactly the refreshing stop we'd hoped for.

Despite the heat, we did enjoy seeing the flamingos up close and chatting with the elephants. We also spotted giraffes, a hippo, and some playful monkeys. But let me tell you, visiting the zoo at noon in August is not the best timing. My advice? Come early in the morning right when they open. That's when the animals are most active and the heat hasn't yet peaked.

Although the zoo is a fun destination, be prepared for the costs. Admission gets you through the gate, but everything inside seems to be an extra charge. We took a short train ride, which was a nice break, but at $4 a pop for a slow five-minute tour, it felt a bit steep. We skipped the carousel despite its tempting presence in the background.

Overall, we had fun, but next time we'll aim for a cooler season like early spring or fall. And yes, we saw penguins and more flamingos, always a highlight!

For those considering a trip to the Denver Zoo, maybe plan for a winter visit—it might just be the perfect time to enjoy it without the heat. Thanks for joining Lucy and me on this adventure!
