Touring a Roman Amphitheater in Catania, Sicily

One would not know by the looks of this excavation, but the Roman Amphitheater in Catania, Sicily was one of the largest in the ancient Roman Empire. Built in 2 stages over decades, the finished theater accommodated 15,000 people! Over the centuries, the amphitheater fell into disuse, and today, countless buildings utilize the ruins of this Roman entertainment center as the foundations for their restaurants, homes, churches and other businesses. Built of lava stone and white marble, extravagant amusement events were scheduled here.
