Typhoon Bebinca, the strongest to hit Shanghai since 1949, caused significant flooding and damage in the city on Monday, leading to the evacuation of over 414,000 people.

The storm made landfall in the Pudong business district with winds reaching 151 kph (94 mph), injuring at least one person due to a falling tree.

As heavy rain flooded roads and uprooted more than 10,000 trees, emergency responders mobilized, with over 60,000 personnel deployed to assist affected areas.

The typhoon knocked out power for around 380 households and damaged several homes, while also disrupting travel by canceling hundreds of flights, ferries, and train services during China’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

The typhoon weakened as it moved inland, impacting nearby provinces with additional rainfall expected, the Associated Press has reported.
