Re-synthesis of glycogen…
Study: post-exercise & 2 hour recovery time:
-low carb athletes got NO CARBS during this time
-high carb athletes DID
STILL: SAME rate of glycogen synthesis over those 2 hours
-you would think, if eating
carbs, get higher rate
of re-synthesis

Can there be glycogen repletion in absence of carb intake?
-typically, we think: no; but literature across species: YES
-what are the carbon resources for this w/o carb intake?
Could be Lactate, recycled to liver, converted to glucose
-some amino acids & glycerol can be used
-keto adapted releases lots
of glycerol
Lactate to liver to glucose
back to muscle: likely
upregulated in fat-adapted state
-same transporters as lactate

Look at actual circulating substrates during recovery…
-lactate & glycerol: higher in low carb athletes
in post-exercise, then dramatic decrease
Where did they go? perhaps into pathway for glycogen
