Keto-adaptation and glycogen metabolism…
Study, 2015, elite ultra-endurance athletes
-low carb group burned a lot of fat: 2X that of high carb
-3 hours exercise using 90% fat burning
[vs high carb at 40% fat]
Resting glycogen &
post-exercise glycogen
were almost EXACTLY
the same
-no outliers

Low carb group were ultra low carb eaters…
-traditionally thought that to maintain optimal glycogen levels
must consume carbs

Glycogen breaks down into glucose…
-then glycolysis...end product pyruvate
-a lot of that converted to acetyl CoA, into Kreb cycle
-fatty acids also converted to acetyl CoA
-keto eaters have little in PDH for conversion,
but lots of fatty acids
Pyruvate can also be converted
into oxaloacetate—necessary
for the Kreb cycle
This keeps the Kreb cycle
running

Pyruvate can also be converted to lactate…
-likely high in keto athletes
-great source of carbon for the cell, an energy source
PPP pentose phosphate pathway, produces
-reducing equivalents NADPH
-5 carbon sugars for RNA,
DNA repair
This may be why it is
critical to have normal
glycogen levels even
in keto adapted state
