3 Ways Oral Bacteria Affect Heart Health and Arterial Wellness
00:00 The Atherogenic Triad
These are the three ways dangerous bacteria in your saliva impact the health of your arteries. Increased amount or concentration of LDL, low density lipoprotein, at the arterial wall affecting the arterial wall permeability, increased cracks or unhealthy openings in the lining of your arterial wall and increased stickiness of the plaque. This is called the atherogenic triad that is a result of dangerous bacteria in your mouth such as Pg, Aa, Tf, Td, and Fn.
To elaborate...
00:30 Atherogenic Triad: LDL's Role
Number one. Increased amount or concentration of LDL at the arterial wall. LDL has been referred to as the bad cholesterol which is not entirely an accurate description. LDL can be helpful, but when LDL become inflamed or oxidized, this is an indication of trouble.
00:49 Arterial Wall Damage
Number two. Increase cracks or permeability in the lining of arterial wall. In our blood vessels, specifically the arteries, one of the first layers of protection is the endothelial lining, which is a one cell layer thick lining on the inside of the arterial pipe that acts as the gatekeeper. This is like a smart barrier between the blood and the underlying layers of the arterial wall. It allows certain particles through and keep certain particles out of the deeper layers of the arterial lining. When the endothelial layer is unhealthy or damaged, it develops cracks or unwanted space between the cells. Debris and toxic particles are allowed into the second layer, the Intima, to begin forming plaque.
01:37 Impact of Oral Bacteria on Plaque Stickiness
Number three. Increased adhesion or stickiness of the plaque. The inner layer underneath the endothelial lining is where plaque forms. High risk oral bacteria and substances produced by them make the inner layers stickier. This allows lipids, toxins, and debris to get trapped more easily and create plaque deposits.
01:58 Testing for Dangerous Oral Bacteria
