Haiti Revolution - Part 3 : Early Independence & Challenges (1804 - 1849)
Haiti's early years of independence were marked by significant economic and political challenges. The country struggled to recover from the devastation of the revolution, rebuild its infrastructure, and establish a stable government. International isolation and a heavy debt burden further hindered Haiti's development.
The United States and France both played a role in isolating Haiti after the revolution. The United States, fearing the spread of revolutionary ideas, refused to recognize Haitian independence until 1862. France, meanwhile, sought to punish Haiti for its rebellion and reassert its control over the former colony.
The two countries engaged in a series of diplomatic maneuvers to isolate Haiti and limit its international influence. This isolation made it difficult for Haiti to secure economic assistance and diplomatic recognition, further hindering its development.
