City leaders reacted Tuesday to a hiring freeze implemented by the City of Chicago, effectively immediately, as it faces a large budget deficit.

The hiring freeze is part of cost-saving measures by the city to address a nearly $225 million budget deficit for 2024, a shortfall that’s forecast to balloon to nearly $1 billion for 2025.
