The Gospel of Matthew, The Use of the Old Testament

Jesus used the Old Testament extensively in His teaching and in His conversations with others, as Matthew has recorded. He referred or alluded to Old Testament laws and events and He showed His listeners the lessons they should have learned from the text of the Old Testament. The fulfillment of prophecy will be covered in a later lesson.
