The Rosetta Stone is an ancient Egyptian artifact discovered in 1799 by French soldiers near the town of Rosetta (modern-day Rashid) in Egypt. It dates back to 196 BC and is inscribed with a decree issued by King Ptolemy V in three scripts: Ancient Greek, Demotic, and Egyptian hieroglyphs. The stone's significance lies in the fact that it provided the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs, which had been a mystery for centuries. French scholar Jean-François Champollion successfully deciphered the hieroglyphs in 1822, using the Greek text as a reference, unlocking a vast amount of knowledge about ancient Egyptian civilization.
