Once Upon A Tram (1959)

An independent film made to capture one of the last journeys of the tram on the Hill of Howth, before Its closure in 1959.

The film was made by John Sarsfield and James Maguire, who were professional photographers by trade, but who had almost no filmmaking experience. Before the tram was scheduled for decommissioning in May 1959, the directors spent much of the early summer riding up and down the line filming people and places. The images are underscored by the poetic script, written by John Sarsfield and narrated by Cyril Cusack.
