During the early 1900s, Ambroise Vollard stood out as the most prominent art dealer of his era. He introduced artists like Cezanne, Matisse, and Vlaminck, among others. The Vollard collection preserves the original copper plates used for the engravings. The heliographs by Cézanne are a mystery until July 1, 2003. The original pieces are now considered invaluable. In 1986, the Vollard collection initiated a project to reissue the prints.
