Police have released new details in a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in a Chandler neighborhood. The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Ruben Felix Alejandro Lopez.

The incident began around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday when Chandler police officers were called to a domestic disturbance at a home on Los Feliz Drive near Tyson Street, just north of Chandler Boulevard. The homeowner met with officers when they arrived, telling them a relative who doesn’t live there was “behaving erratically” in the backyard.

Chandler PD says officers accessed the backyard through a side gate and were immediately confronted by Lopez, who was reportedly armed with two large knives and making threatening comments.

According to police, the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation for more than 30 minutes as Lopez continuously refused to comply with their commands. Officers reportedly used less lethal devices to get him to surrender, which were unsuccessful.

Officials say Lopez then charged at police “in an aggressive manner” with the knives, and three officers opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were hurt, and the investigation is ongoing.
