The control arms in BMW's F8X front suspension architecture affect steering feel and suspension alignment while ensuring the wheel remains in its proper place. The OE arms use rubber bushings and a sealed ball joint, and while they're great for street use with stock components, adjustable aftermarket parts make an excellent upgrade for anyone looking for more handling performance. Replacing the front control arms is a pretty standard job, as the bushings will wear out, but it gives any owner the perfect excuse to upgrade.

The control arm bushings and joints will develop play through regular road use; it's natural and certainly not a BMW-specific issue. When that occurs, the steering feel can become vague, and you may begin to hear knocks or clunks as you drive over bumps in the road or turn a certain way. Replacing the control arms with OE parts will restore the factory ride quality, but stepping up to a set of adjustable SPL arms offers the chance for a better alignment. Their construction allows for camber, roll center, and caster adjustment, all of which are critical to how a car handles the road ahead.

In this video, FCP Euro's Professional DIYer, Mike Hidalgo, replaces the control arms on a BMW F82 M4.
