Russian Navy commences ‘Ocean 2024’ strategic exercise

10.09.24 - The drills will run until September 16 with more than 400 warships, submarines, support vessels, over 120 naval aircraft, around 7,000 units of weaponry, military and special hardware, and more than 90,000 personnel.

The drills will take place in the Pacific and Arctic oceans and the Mediterranean, Caspian, and Baltic seas, to practice combat scenarios and landing operations on unequipped coastlines.

⚓️Russia's Navy commences Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise

In accordance with the training plan of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the Russian Navy today launched the Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise, which will last until 16 September 2024. The exercise, which will become one of the most important operational and combat training events of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 2024, is to be conducted in a bilateral format under the overall command of Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev, the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.

More than 400 warships, submarines and support vessels, over 120 naval aircraft, some 7,000 units of weaponry, military and special hardware, and more than 90,000 personnel will participate in the drills, which will take place in the waters of the Pacific and Arctic oceans, Mediterranean, Caspian, and Baltic seas.

The Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise is aimed at checking the readiness of the senior staff of the Russian Navy to operate all-arms groups of forces in the areas of responsibility, to solve non-standard operational tasks, to make full use of high-precision weapons, advanced and modern weapons and military hardware in the practical part of the exercise, and to expand cooperation with the navies of partner countries to perform joint maritime missions.

As part of the first phase of the strategic command post exercise, the military command and control bodies will determine how to deploy the groups of forces in the designated training areas.

In the second phase, the participants will be involved in a combat scenario to defeat strategically important objects and forces of the mock enemy. They will also practise landing operations on an unequipped coast, protecting maritime economic activities and strategic communication facilities, taking into account modern naval warfare.

Operational groups from other security services and federal bodies of the executive branch of power, namely, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief, the Federal Security Service, the Federal National Guard Service, and the Federal Guard Service, are due to be involved in the Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise.

Operational groups of military command and control bodies and military contingents from foreign partners of the Russian Federation have been also invited to participate in the drills.

Ocean (Okean) is the codename of the naval exercises conducted by the USSR Navy in 1970, 1975, 1977, 1983, and 1985. These manoeuvres were the Soviet Navy's largest post-war operational and combat training event and the largest in world history for its time.
