DC police release bodycam video of the fatal shooting of violence interrupter, Justin Robinson

On Monday, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) released the body-worn camera footage of police fatally shooting 26-year-old Justin Robinson, documenting the moments leading up to, during and immediately after his death.

Officers responded to a McDonald’s on Marion Barry Avenue SE shortly after 5 a.m. on Sept. 1 after receiving a call about a car crashing into the building.

In the released video, the driver’s side of Robinson’s white car is shown in the drive-thru lane. A wheel is slightly on the curb and the front of the car has some damage. Robinson was in the driver’s seat, unconscious.

The video showed that an ambulance and first responders were already at the scene. After the involved officers arrived, more police cars responded to the scene as well.

The officer spoke briefly with a woman behind Robinson’s car in the drive-thru. He knocked on the side of her door, saying “You, get out. Get out. You’re too drunk to drive – get out of the car and walk now.”

He opened her driver’s side door and threatened to pull her out of the car if she didn’t get out. She said she was not drunk and that she’d been in the drive-thru line for 30 minutes. He told her to put her car in reverse and to leave – which she did.

At about nine-and-a-half minutes into the video, the officer drove his squad car in front of Robinson’s, while another remained parked behind him, blocking him in.

Throughout the entire time, Robinson did not appear to wake up,

“It looks like the doors are unlocked, but I haven’t checked yet,” the officer said.

With his gun drawn, he made his way to the driver’s side of Robinson’s car. He told the other officers, “Listen, if you’re aiming,” he motioned with his gun pointed down, “like down.”

Robinson’s window was cracked open.

“Stand by,” the officer seemed to say to the group of officers a few moments later. “There’s no rush.”

At 13:15 into the video, Robinson wakes up, stirring in his seat. “We’ve got movement,” the officer recording said.

One officer yelled, “Sir, keep your hands off the gun.” Several others yelled, “Hands up, hands up!” The three officers closest to Robinson all had their guns pointed at him.

Robinson rolled his window down as they continued yelling at him to keep his hands up.

Then, just after 13.5 minutes into the video, the officer begins shooting. At least 11 shots were fired, shattering Robinson’s window and striking him.

About 10 seconds later, the officer screamed again for him to put his hands up, but he did not move.

“We’ve got to treat him, bro,” the officer said. He opened Robinson’s door, rolling him toward him while asking, “Hey, you got any other firearms, bro?”

The officer dragged him out of the car. The officer yells for first responders to bring a “kit” over.

In the last three-and-a-half minutes of the video, paramedics can be seen trying to give Robinson aid. The officer’s body-worn camera shows where Robinson was sitting. Shattered glass and blood covered his seat.

He died there.
