New Testament / Koine Greek, lecture #10: Basics of Biblical Greek Workbook, Mounce, chapter 11

A study of William or Bill Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek Workbook, Chapter 11, Track 1, First and Second Person Personal Pronouns. The pronouns ego and su with their various forms (ego, mou / emou, moi / emoi, me / eme, hemeis, hemon, hemin, and hemas, 1st person; su, sou, soi, se, humeis, humon, humin, humas, the 2nd person singular forms both with and without accents) are reviewed from the BBG workbook (3rd edition). All parsing, warm-up, translation, and additional exercises are completed. English to Greek exercises on the personal pronouns are also completed at the end of the chapter, contrary to the usual pattern of William Mounce in including only Greek to English exercises.

Third declension stems in tau and delta, consonantal iota stems, and words like pater (father) and hudor (water) are examined. The exercises reinforce what Dr. Mounce taught in chapter 11 of his textbook, Basics of Biblical Greek, namely, that a personal pronoun is a word replacing a personal noun; the English personal pronouns are “I, my, me, we, our, us” (first person, the person speaking) and “you, your” (second person, the person spoken to), or in the early modern English of the King James Version, "thee, thou, and thy" for the 2nd person singular and "ye / you" for the 2nd person plural; the third person pronoun references the person spoken about; the case of a pronoun is determined by its function in the sentence, number and person by its antecedent; words like pistis ("faith") end in a consonantal iota, and are all feminine; and personal pronouns in oblique cases (i.e., not in the nominative) can have accents when they are used emphatically.

A discussion of John 20:28 and the problems the text poses for anti-Trinitarian cults such as the Watchtower Society or so-called "Jehovah's Witnesses" takes place in connection with the translation of the verse in class.
