In Ezekiel chapters 44 and 45, Ezekiel continues his tour of the temple grounds that has yet to be built physically. Yahweh instructs Ezekiel that the outer gate facing east is to remain closed and only Yahweh and the prince (or leader) are allowed to use it. The prince will have a meal before Yahweh at that gate. The chapters emphasize the importance of holiness and the distinction between the holy and the common. God calls out the detestable practices of bringing foreigners into the sanctuary without prepared hearts. The chapters also address the role of priests in teaching the people the difference between the holy and the common. The portion of land reserved for Yahweh and the sacrifices mentioned in chapter 45 are seen as spiritual representations rather than literal practices. The chapters conclude with the reminder that God is our portion and that we are to trust Him with everything we have.
