On Friday, BPD Chief Scott Thurmond stated that the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) found that Jaylin Patton did not fire shots at responding officers during its investigation.

“So we want to be sure that we clarify to the public that our officer was not shot at,” Chief Thurmond said. “But we do see from the video that this individual did have a gun and what transpired and led up to the shooting.”

Thurmond also confirmed the unidentified officer who shot and injured Patton is on paid administrative leave. He also stated the traffic stop was initiated due to “criminal activity” that was observed by officers.

During the press conference, body cam and dash cam footage of the shooting was shown to reporters and has been released publicly online. In the videos, an officer can be heard ordering Patton to “drop the gun” before firing multiple shots in his direction.

According to Thurmond, ALEA will secure criminal charges against Patton before his 48-hour felony hold expires. He is still being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.
