As well as the inevitable Covid inquiry, we need a public consultation and inquiry into the government's reliance on behavioral science. This time we were locked up, and its time to look at what they've been doing.
The 'Nudge Unit' is the colloquial term for the Behavioral Insights team-- and its now legally and operationally separate from the government. The have offices in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. There's also SPIVY, which is a voluntray group of adviors. But what I found disturbing is how many brick walls I hit when I was trying to find out abour behavioral science in government. But what became clear is how much the government does rely on behavioral science. There are behavorial scientists in probably every government department, the NHS, and within public health England. There are units set up to manage the flow of information, manage counter disinformation. You might call it propaganda, you might call if behavioral psychology, what they do is a little bit opaque. There's the counter disinformation unit, there's research information communication unit, there GCHQ, there's the 77th Brigade which is part of the Army.
