Praying Statue of Pedro I de Castilla
The praying statue of Peter I of Castile is an alabaster sculpture dating from 1401 - 1500, representing Peter I of Castile (Burgos, Castile, August 30, 1334 - Montiel, Castile, March 23, 1369), called the Cruel by his detractors and the Just by his supporters, king of Castile from March 26, 1350 until his death.
It is a funerary sculpture, originally conceived as a recumbent statue in the tomb of the monarch, inside the main chapel of the Convent of Santo Domingo el Real in Madrid, where the mortal remains were transferred at the express request of the king's granddaughter, Doña Constanza, daughter of Juan de Castilla and abbess of the aforementioned convent.
The funerary monument was rebuilt in 1504 by order of the Catholic Monarchs and it was then that the statue, which was initially recumbent (lying down), was transformed into a kneeling one. In the 17th century, the legs were partially cut off so that the figure could be placed in a niche. (wikipedia)
