Downsides of Affirmative Action and Quotas

Affirmative action is a policy designed to address historical injustices and promote diversity, but introducing diversity targets and quotas has many downsides:

1. Reverse Discrimination: Individuals from majority groups can be disadvantaged in favour of minority candidates.
2. Meritocracy Concerns: Less qualified candidates can be selected over more qualified ones due to their identity.
3. Dependency: A culture of dependency could be created where beneficiaries rely on the policy rather than their own merit.
4. Stigma: Negative stereotypes are inadvertently reinforced with beneficiaries being seen as less capable and only getting the job due to their identity.
5. Increased Tensions: Favouring one group over another will almost certainly lead to increased tension among groups.
6. Quality of Work: The quality of work may be impacted if individuals are selected based on criteria other than performance or qualifications.
7. Policy Removal Challenges: Once implemented, these policies can be difficult to remove, even if the original reasons for their implementation have been addressed.

I don’t see a good side to quotas. They can only result in a more divided society.
