The Kern County Sheriff's Office released body-camera video of the deputy-involved shooting, leaving a man dead, in Onyx as deputies responded to a restraining order violation.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday, August 5, 2024, deputies assigned to the Civil Unit responded to the 8000 block of Melody Lane in Onyx to serve a temporary domestic violence restraining order and move out order for 25-year-old Austin Springer.

KCSO said on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at around 8 a.m., deputies assigned to the Kern Valley substation responded to investigate a restraining order violation on the 8000 block of Melody Lane in Onyx.

The victim made several calls of Springer possibly being in her house. The victim said she was not home. According to the call, Stringer was identified as “her son.”

As deputies arrived, the victim said she returned to her home where Springer was last reported to be at.

Springer had multiple warrants in addition to the domestic violence restraining order violation, according to KCSO.

When deputies arrived, the victim gave consent to search her home and two structures to find Springer.

Springer was found in a camping trailer to the rear of the property. Deputies made multiple attempts to talk to Springer.

KCSO said deputies were given consent from the victim to cut the cord securing the trailer door.

Body camera video showed moments Springer allegedly aiming a gun at deputies. Deputies shot at him at around 8:13 a.m.

Springer went back into the trailer. Deputies asked for additional resources while making multiple announcements for Springer to drop his gun and leave the trailer.

More units arrived with armer and a drone to safely enter the trailer.

KCSO said Springer died from his injury. He was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. by medical personnel.

According to KCSO, the gun Springer had was a black Crosman CO2 powered BB gun.
