Indonesia: Orphans and refugees receive the Pope
Immediately after his arrival in the Indonesian capital, Pope Francis met the needy, refugees and orphans in the nunciature. The press office distributed photos of the meeting, in which a visibly good-humored Pope in a wheelchair can be seen, talking to those present.
The refugees are cared for by the Jesuit Refugee Service, while the orphaned children are raised by the Dominican Sisters. The elderly, other refugees and homeless people accompanied by the Indonesian community of Sant'Egidio were also present at the meeting. Among them were members of the Muslim Rohingya from Myanmar and refugees from Sri Lanka. In the morning, Francis had arrived in Jakarta after a thirteen-hour flight from Rome. After an initial welcome by several dignitaries, including the Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, and Jakarta's Archbishop Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, he went directly to the nunciature, about 30 kilometers away. It took the papal entourage about 30 minutes in the midst of lively traffic, men, women and children in white T-shirts waved flags at the sight of the white car in which Francis was sitting and shouted the Indonesian "Welcome", "Selamat datang". After the unofficial meeting with the approximately 40 refugees, orphans, needy and elderly people in the nunciature, no further appointments are scheduled for the head of the Church on Tuesday.
