Da Urban Conservative: When Is Enough Going to Be Enough?
Welcome back to Da Urban Conservative, where we dig deep into the issues that matter most to our community. Today, we're asking a critical question: When is enough going to be enough?
Let's start with the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Many of you know it as the Fair Housing Act, a law that was supposed to open the doors of opportunity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of race, could live where they choose. But here's the truth—nowhere in that Act will you find a mention of Black people. Not once does it explicitly say it's about us. It’s as if the struggles, the sacrifices, and the lives lost in the battle for civil rights were just another footnote in history, not worth naming. So, I ask you—how much longer are we going to accept laws that sidestep the very people they claim to protect?
Then there's the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. On paper, it sounds like a step forward, right? But let's be real—this law was designed with a particular focus on protecting the white LGBT community. Don’t get me wrong, every life deserves protection, but once again, where's the specific acknowledgment of the violence that Black people face daily? Where's the focus on our communities being torn apart by hate? When do we get laws that truly reflect our reality?
And finally, let’s talk about the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act. Emmett Till’s story is one of the most tragic and brutal chapters in American history. Yet, this Act, which is supposed to be in his name, isn't even specific to Black people. It’s so weak that it wasn’t even used to prosecute Carolyn Bryant, the woman who lied and set the lynch mob on young Emmett, and who was still walking free when that bill was signed into law. This Act was supposed to be a beacon of justice, but instead, it’s another example of empty promises.
So, I ask you, my brothers and sisters—when is enough going to be enough? How much longer are we going to tolerate legislation that fails to protect us, fails to recognize our pain, and fails to deliver the justice we deserve?
It's time to hold these lawmakers accountable. It’s time to demand that our lives, our struggles, and our histories are not just acknowledged but are at the forefront of any legislation that claims to protect us.
Stay tuned to Da Urban Conservative, where we keep it real, raw, and relevant. But remember—change starts with us. Let's make our voices heard.
