National Council elections
Overview
Austrians are actively entitled to vote in a National Council election if they have reached the age of 16 on the day of the National Council election at the latest; i.e. those persons who celebrate their 16th birthday on election day (September 29, 2024) at the latest. The acquisition of the right to stand as a candidate in a National Council election takes place if a candidate has Austrian citizenship on the election date (July 9, 2024) and reaches the age of 18 on the day of the election at the latest; i.e. those persons who celebrate their 18th birthday on election day at the latest. Voting is not compulsory.
For the National Council election, the Austrian federal territory is divided into nine provincial constituencies, which in turn are subdivided into a total of 39 regional constituencies (for more details, see our website constituency division).
In a National Council election, 183 members of parliament are elected. Candidates must submit (at least) one nomination.
Nominations require the signature of three members of the National Council. Otherwise, they must be accompanied by declarations of support to the following extent...
