Following the troops' discovery of the remains of six hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which infuriated the country, tens of thousands of Israelis staged demonstrations. While most of the protests in Tel Aviv were nonviolent, sizable masses managed to breach police barriers and obstruct a major thoroughfare. The protests coincided with a statewide general strike call by Histadrut, one of Israel's largest labour unions, which demanded that the government make peace with Hamas.
