Restored footage of areas of New York City, United States, filmed between 1901 and 1903. See the bustling streets of Lower Broadway, see a panoramic view of New York from the Hudson River before most of the famous New York skyscrapers were built, see the traffic in front of the newly constructed Fuller Building that went on to be known as the Flatiron, see Madison Square at the turn of the century, and see the full trams of New York on Broadway and Union Square.
These historical films of New York City were mostly recorded by the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, a motion picture company founded by motion picture camera pioneer William Kennedy Dickson in 1895. Until 1903, the Biograph Company primarily focused on documentary films but went on to produce over 3000 short films and 12 feature films until they stopped in 1916. One of the films in this video was produced by Thomas A. Edison Inc., a company founded by inventor Thomas Edison, who was also a pioneer of motion pictures and actually employed William Kennedy Dickson (founder of the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company) to work on early motion picture cameras.
