On November 30, 2021, a tragic mass shooting occurred at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, Michigan. Ethan Crumbley, a 15-year-old student, carried out the attack with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, resulting in the deaths of four students and injuring seven others, including a teacher. Crumbley, who was charged with 24 crimes including murder and terrorism, pleaded guilty in October 2022 and was sentenced in December 2023.Crumbley’s parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, were also charged with involuntary manslaughter for their failure to secure the handgun used in the shooting. Prior to the incident, there were rumors of a possible mass shooting, which led some students to stay home. Despite this, the school administration dismissed the threats, citing no credible danger. On the day of the shooting, surveillance footage showed Crumbley entering a bathroom and emerging with the handgun. He began firing in the hallway, targeting students and staff. Thanks to the quick actions of students and staff—who locked and barricaded classrooms upon hearing an active shooter alert—Crumbley was unable to enter the classrooms. The first 911 call was made at 12:51 PM, and Crumbley was apprehended by police within minutes of their arrival.Three students—Madisyn Baldwin, Tate Myre, and Hana St. Juliana—were killed on the scene, with Justin Schilling dying later in the hospital. Eight others were injured. Crumbley had previously met with school officials twice, once for searching ammunition and another time for drawing violent imagery and threatening statements on his desk. Despite these warning signs, no action was taken to prevent the tragedy.
