Father Dave, Doug Pyeatt and Andrew Logan discuss this week's lectionary reading from the Hebrew Bible: 1 Kings 8:22-30,42-43 - Solomon's prayer of dedication of the Temple.

Solomon prays a very pious prayer, dedicating the greatest of Israel's sacred spaces. The temple will go on to play a key role in the worshipping life of the people of Israel. Even so, there are problems with the temple from the outset. It is constructed on a pagan site and, worse still, was only built using the forced labour of the people of the north. This will sow the seeds for the rebellion that will take place after Solomon's death. By the time of the New Testament, the temple was still revered, yet the Apostle Stephen saw the building of the temple as the low-point of Israel's history. He was stoned for 'speaking against the temple' and the charge was justified. Indeed, the temple played an ambiguous role in the life of the Biblical people.
