It is remarkable that Paul here draws on imagery associated with the Roman military here in his depiction of the spiritual warrior. Paul may have been chained to a legionary as he wrote this letter!

Doubtless, it was not his affection for the occupying forces that prompted Paul's use of the metaphor. It could have only been the DISCIPLINE of the Roman solider that prompted the comparison.
