Democrats’ Plot to Censor AI-Generated Memes—What They Don’t Want You to See
Washington is increasingly extending its influence into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) as authorities aim to regulate all AI models. Leading AI companies, OpenAI and Anthropic, have agreed to share their AI models with the U.S. government's AI Safety Institute prior to public release, allowing officials to assess their "capabilities and risks."
Additionally, OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly "collaborating on methods to mitigate potential issues," according to Bloomberg.
"Safety is essential to fueling breakthrough technological innovation," stated Elizabeth Kelley, director of the AI Safety Institute. "These agreements mark an important milestone as we work to responsibly guide the future of AI."
The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced its "close collaboration with the UK's AI Safety Institute" to carry out similar efforts internationally.
OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, expressed strong support for the U.S. AI Safety Institute's mission, emphasizing the institute’s role in shaping U.S. leadership in responsible AI development and hoping their collaboration sets a global standard.
The partnership between Washington and the AI industry is raising concerns about the potential suppression of free speech. House Democrats are pushing for the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to introduce a new rule allowing AI-generated images created by Grok, the AI program developed by Elon Musk, to be censored or banned. This move is aimed at reducing the number of memes that criticize Democrat candidates, including Kamala Harris, as the election approaches.
An independent media source summarized the situation: "They want to eradicate memes they don't like."
House Democrats defended their position, emphasizing the importance of addressing the spread of "fake content" in the 2024 presidential election.
"This election cycle, we've seen AI used in campaign ads to depict candidates in actions or statements that didn't occur," they stated.
It appears that House Democrats are referring to parody videos and memes, such as those mocking Kamala Harris.
With genuine intelligence in short supply, Washington seems to be turning to artificial intelligence in an effort to maintain its grip on power.
