John’s warning here is not against those who pretend to have the Spirit’s presence and thus are false prophets, that is bad enough. But here it is against genuine evil spirits’ who are inspiring these false prophets. These false prophets were and are inspired by the evil one.
MAR 13:22-23, For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.
