A conservative-backed initiative to tighten voter eligibility requirements is threatening to throw a wrench into
ongoing efforts to prevent a government shutdown next month.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (S A V E) Act, which aims to bar noncitizens from voting,
has become a lightning rod for debate as lawmakers scramble to reach a consensus on keeping the
government funded past September 30.

The House Freedom Caucus, a group of hard-line conservatives,
is leading the charge to attach the SAVE Act to a must-pass continuing resolution (C R) that would
temporarily extend government funding.

This move, as reported by The Hill,
has set the stage for a potential showdown with the Democratic-controlled Senate,
which is likely to reject such a package.
