Is it not obvious, the Great Expositor of the Psalms who is Charles H. Spurgeon was inspired by many other writers, previous to The Treasury Of David. We too shall follow in his footsteps.
In the prose, phrases, paragraphs breaks, and the use of storytelling.
If I were to hazard a guess; the following story by W. M. Thompson
is of the 18th Century?
Possibly, a child’s Bible story to help children learn not only scripture but a Biblical concept.
We all have been influenced by a former generation. Even then we had a COMMON enemy.
I recall reading after expositors like Mathew Henry who equated the Great Whore of Babylon to be the Roman Catholic Church.
If your formative years was before 1940, much of your life was influenced by your church affiliation, your parents and your school and your father’s employment.
If your formative years were from 1955 forward.
Each year thereafter was progressing in dark programming.
Until, if your formative years was in the last 10 years.
Something of a distraction from ever day living, would be something very dark and ominous.
Has anyone noticed the programming on Netflix. Very witchy, vampiric, revenge dealing death and darkness.
What is the latest satanist, sighting of a UAP on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram. Dark stories?
Don’t we yearn for simpler days, purer times.
In these former days, of the 18th Century, were days in which a distraction was a empty raft drifting along a river without someone to steer it.
Or it maybe a shepherd’s heard of sheep crossing a stream.
Introduction by
To The Great 23rd Psalm
~W. M. Thompson
Come down to the river; there is something going forward worth seeing.
Yon shepherd is about to lead his flock across; and as our Lord says of the good shepherd-you observe that he goes before, and the sheep follow.
Not all in the same manner, however. Some enter boldly, and come straight across.
These are the loved ones of the flock, who keep hard by the footsteps of the shepherd, whether sauntering through green meadows by the still waters, feeding upon the mountains, or resting at noon, beneath the shadow of great rocks.
And now others enter, but in doubt and alarm. Far from their guide, they miss the ford, and are carried down the river, some more, some less; and yet, one by one, they all struggle over and make good their landing.
Notice those little lambs. They refuse to enter, and must be driven into the stream by the shepherd's dog, mentioned by Job in his "parable." Poor things! how they leap, and plunge, and bleat in terror!
That weak one yonder will be swept quite away, and perish in the sea. But no; the shepherd himself leaps into the stream, lifts it into his chest, and bears it trembling to the shore.
All safely over, how happy they appear!
The lambs frisk and gambol about in high spirits, while the older ones gather round their faithful guide, and look up to him in subdued but expressive thankfulness.
Now, can you watch such a scene, and not think of that Shepherd who leads Joseph like a flock; and of another river, which all his sheep must cross? He, too, goes before, and, as in the case of this flock, they who keep near him "fear no evil."
They hear his sweet voice, saying,
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you.
When you walk through fire, you will not be scorched,
Nor will the flame burn you.”

With eye fastened on him, they scarcely see the stream, or feel its cold and threatening waves. They jump in, with abandon.
Having trusted the Shepherd so many times before.

Psalm 23:2
Verse 2 He lets me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still and quiet waters.
Representative Text
1 He leadeth me: O blessed thought!
O words with heavenly comfort fraught!
Whate'er I do, where'er I be,
still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.
Refrain:
He leadeth me, he leadeth me;
by his own hand he leadeth me:
his faithful follower I would be,
by his hand he leadeth me
He Leadeth me

[[The Christian life has two elements in it, the contemplative and the active, and both of these are richly provided.]]
[[First, the contemplative. "He lets me lie down in green pastures;”
What are these "green pastures" but the Scriptures of truth with which are fresh, always rich, and yet it is never exhausted? ]]
[[Sweet and full are the doctrines of the gospel; fit food for souls, as tender grass is natural nutriment for sheep. It is the only way I stay grounded is in reading in reading the Bible every day.]]
[[When by faith we are enabled to find rest in the promises, we are like the sheep that lie down in the midst of the pasture; we find at the same moment both PROVENDER and PEACE, REST and REFRESHMENT, SERENITY and SATISFACTION. ]]
[[“He lets me lie down” he graciously enables us to perceive the preciousness of his truth, and to spiritually feed upon it.]]
[[How grateful should we be for the power to appropriate the promises!]]
[[There are many now who didn’t grow up with the Scriptures.
They lean on their own understanding.
May I hazard a guess; there are 50% of this small group who had an experience with Jesus before the age of 14 years.
And another 50% who have had a favorable impression of a Christian in the last 10 years. As my an impression.]]
[[We know the goodness of taste and see if the Lord is good.]]
Psalms 34:8

[[Yet others cannot say that this blessedness is theirs. They can visualize the "green pastures," but they are not made to "lie down" in them.]]
[[The second part of a vigorous Christian's life consists in gracious activity.]]
[[We not only think, but we act. We are not always lying down to feed, but are journeying onward toward perfection; hence we read, “He leads me beside the still and quiet waters.”
For some of your ministry is your children in your home.]]

[[Some helps near the end of the description box.]]
[[What are these "still waters" but the influences and graces of his blessed Spirit?
His Spirit attends to us in various ways,
like waters—
in the plural—
to cleanse,
to refresh,
to fertilize,
to cherish.
These are "still waters," for the Holy Spirit loves peace. When there are times of refreshing—revel in them. Enjoy them all the more.]]
[[Our messenger of peace is a dove, not an eagle; the dew, not the hurricane.
Our Lord leads us beside these "still waters;" we could not go there of ourselves, we need his guidance, therefore it is said, "he leads me." He does not drive us.]]
[[Moses drives us by the law, but Jesus leads us by his example, and the gentle drawing of his love.]]
Psalm 23:3
Verse 3 He refreshes and restores my soul (life);
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
for His name’s sake.
[[ "He restores my soul."
When does the soul grow?
When sins, come to mind from the distant past.
When sorrowfully received
Jesus forgives us our sin and cleanses us and then keeps us Clean.]]
[[When does a soul grow?
When it is at its weakness the soul feels temptation.
Ask him, and he strengthens you.]]
I Corinthians 10:13

[[When do we grow when our reliance is our own Shepherd to give direction rather than every advisor.
"He restores my soul."
Are any of us low in grace?
Do we feel that our spirituality is at its lowest ebb?]]

[[The Christian is not obedient to some commandments and neglectful of others; he does not pick and choose, but yields to all.
Look the plural is used]]
Psalm 23:3
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2023%3A3&version=AMP
[[The second part of 23:3b
He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.]]
[[Whatever God may give us to do we will be led do it, led by his love.]]
[[Some Christians overlook the blessing of sanctification, consecrated for God’s use, and yet a thoroughly renewed heart is what is needed.
This is one of the sweetest gifts of the covenant.]]
[[To know the Saviour, both as a Redeemer from your past sins.
And as a purifier of our inner nature (the EGO) which causes much hurt in and out of your family.]]
[[Outside, in the community at large if an eruption (of the (EGO) were to occur.
The community at large have a much larger view of Christianity than they would be saddled with themselves.
They perceive attitudes of being bitchy as not very Christian. Similarly attitudes of being:
Catty
Cruel
Hateful
Mean
Murder
Nasty
Spiteful
Vicious
These are the attitudes of the World.
We would not expect anything less of Nathan Rothschild or a relation of George Soros, born a male, fulfilling the parents’ worship of the Baphomet, Greta Tintin Eleanor Ernman Thunberg of the “How Dare You” fame.]]
[[Before coming this WAY, we main desire was to be relieved of the sin that so easily beset us and then God has us led in the WAY of holiness.]]
•
In the New World, in the Golden Age we will be a holy people
Be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.
