What you should do within 15 minutes of a nuclear blast
If you only have 15 minutes after a nuclear blast, focusing on these six methods can significantly increase your chances of survival:
1. Find Shelter
Why It Increases Survival: Immediately finding shelter is crucial as it protects you from the initial blast’s intense heat, shockwave, and radiation. Ideal shelters include underground bunkers, basements, or the interior of sturdy buildings. Thick walls and layers of material between you and the outside can drastically reduce exposure to lethal radiation and fallout. The faster you find shelter, the better your chances of surviving the immediate and most dangerous effects of the blast.
2. Sanitize Yourself and Your Food
Why It Increases Survival: Once sheltered, it's essential to remove radioactive particles that may have settled on your body and clothing. Carefully remove your outer clothing, which can eliminate up to 90% of radioactive contamination. Wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water to reduce further exposure. Ensure that any food and water you consume are free from contamination, as ingesting radioactive materials can lead to internal radiation poisoning, which is often fatal.
3. Secure Your Environment from Contamination
Why It Increases Survival: Sealing your environment from outside contamination is crucial to avoid exposure to radioactive fallout. Close all windows, doors, and any ventilation openings to prevent radioactive particles from entering your shelter. If possible, use plastic sheeting and duct tape to cover openings, creating an airtight seal. This action helps maintain a safe breathing environment and reduces the risk of long-term radiation exposure.
4. Gather Supplies
Why It Increases Survival: With limited time, gather essential supplies like water, non-perishable food, first aid kits, and any necessary medications. These supplies will be vital during the initial period when it’s unsafe to leave your shelter. Having enough resources on hand can sustain you and your group until it's safe to emerge, reducing the need to risk exposure to radiation outside your shelter.
5. Distance Away from Blast
Why It Increases Survival: If you are at a distance from the blast site, your chances of surviving the initial impact are higher. However, you still need to find immediate shelter to protect against the subsequent radiation and fallout. The further you are from the blast, the lower your exposure to the most intense levels of radiation. Increasing your distance from the blast zone reduces the overall radiation dose you receive, which is critical for survival.
6. Wait It Out
Why It Increases Survival: The radiation levels are highest immediately after the blast but decrease over time. Waiting it out in a secure and safe location significantly reduces your risk of radiation sickness. Staying sheltered for at least 24-48 hours after the blast allows time for radiation levels to decrease to safer levels. The longer you remain protected, the greater your chances of surviving the aftermath of the explosion.
By implementing these six methods—finding immediate shelter, decontaminating yourself and your environment, securing your shelter, gathering essential supplies, maximizing distance from the blast, and waiting out the radiation—you can greatly improve your chances of surviving in the critical period following a nuclear blast.
