Twilight's Reflection

Searching for answers in a world so cold
In the shadows of a thousand stories told

I'm nearing the end of my days of 40 years
fighting to protect this fading flame
Drifting on this river, (lost and adrift)
Hope's embers grow dim
All this struggle, all this pain and nothing gained

A boy without a future
Nothing on the horizon
to drive him forward
Just sleep walking through life

In the twilight of existence
I ponder the impermanence of it all
The fleeting nature of joy and sorrow
As I drift closer to the edge
Of what comes after
Approaching the final threshold
The only two anchors in my life gone

I release my grip on certainty
Embracing the mystery that awaits
Beyond the veil of consciousness

Over the horizon
hope in the form of a distant light
of greener pastures in the next life

Context- This song about about an old man that has been suffering for the majority of his life. His childhood was filled with horrific physical and mental abuse by his parents. Told everyday he was worthless and that he should had never been born. Everywhere he goes in life he feels like he's unwanted and alone. He's broken, and now he drifts through life as an empty shell just waiting for it to end, as he drifts on an empty river without a paddle.
