1993 Lions at Patriots (Part 1 of 3)
Enhancement inspired by Dave Volsky | Sept. 12, 1993 - The Lions edged New England in overtime, 19-16, behind the rushing of all-pro running back Barry Sanders and the play of Detroit's special teams, earning Detroit its first 2-0 start since 1985. Sanders was Detroit's main offensive weapon with 148 yards rushing on 32 carries with 120 of the yards coming after halftime. The Lions' defensive unit, led by Chris Spielman's 13 tackles (6 solo) and George Jamison's nine tackles (7 solo) and one sack, yielded only 16 points, even though the Patriots were inside the Lions' 20 five times. The lone touchdown came at an inopportune time for the Lions, however, as rookie quarterback Drew Bledsoe connected with Vincent Brisby on a two-yard scoring strike with 12 seconds left in regulation. On Detroit's second possession of the extra period, the Lions drove 60 yards to set up a 38-yard field goal by Jason Hanson, his fourth successful field goal of the game (22, 26, 23 and 38 yards).
