"I found that experience to be incredibly useful, especially because I had the mindset that I wanted to win. However, even when I lost—and I lost for a long time—it didn’t make me stop. I always saw each loss as an opportunity to identify areas for improvement. I would ask myself, 'Why did I lose? Was it because I was nervous, or was my technique not good enough at the time?' I used those tournaments as a way to pinpoint what I could work on, and then I would go back and discuss it with my teacher and training partners.

I believe that competition is very beneficial. It puts you in high-stress situations where you get nervous, but it’s essential to learn how to manage that stress. This is something important for parents to understand: When you learn to handle the stress of competition, it also helps you deal with other challenging situations, like public speaking or giving a presentation."
